Murat Kaptan was born in 1971 in İzmir. He started scuba diving in 2003 and today he has a 15 year-long experience of underwater photography which was initiated as a hobby. In Turkey, he has dived in all diving regions including the Lake Van. He has accomplished advanced level divings and shot underwater photographs in the Red Sea and in the waters of Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.
In order to increase the awareness of children, in particular, in terms of preserving nature, he has held 5 solo exhibitions, received national and international awards, participated in conferences and has been interviewed by various magazines.
Since 2016, he has been the visual coordinator of “İzmir Bay Oceanographic Monitoring Project” conducted by the Metropolitan Municipality General Directorate of Water Supply and Sewerage Administration (IZSU) in collaboration with Dokuz Eylul University, Institute of Marine Sciences and Technology (DEU-IMST).
Kaptan is the Chairman of the Board of İzmir Photographic Art Association (İFOD) and the captain and trainer of the underwater imaging team of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Youth and Sports Club. He is married and has one child.
